Vitality is the only major UK life insurer that turns healthy living into actual money back on your policy. Add the Optimiser to your cover and earn an upfront premium discount — up to 30% off Term Life, or 40% off Whole of Life — then track your activity to keep it.
The Vitality Programme is built around four statuses — Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The more you engage, the higher your status, and the more your rewards compound: Apple Watch contributions, cinema tickets, weekly Caffè Nero, and a serious reduction in your renewal premium at Platinum.
Start with the cover every UK adult needs, then add modular extras that match your family, your wealth and your plans.

Vitality is one of the strongest-rated life insurers in the UK, with independent data that makes the case in plain English.
We chose Thelifeinsurancepolicy to help us compare Vitality, and the difference compared to our old insurer was night and day. Within a week we had whole of life cover, the Optimiser discount, and an Apple Watch deal that pays for itself.
The questions we hear most often from UK residents comparing Vitality cover.
There's no single right answer, but the most common rule of thumb is 10× your annual income. The real number depends on your mortgage balance, number of dependents, outstanding debts, and the legacy you want to leave. If you have a repayment mortgage, a decreasing term policy that tracks your outstanding balance is usually the most cost-effective. If you want to leave a meaningful lump sum on top, add a level term or whole of life policy.
When a life insurance policy is "written in trust", the payout goes directly to your chosen beneficiaries — not into your estate. This means the money bypasses probate (so your family gets it faster) and is excluded from 40% Inheritance Tax calculations. For UK families with an estate above the £325,000 nil-rate band, writing in trust can save a substantial amount in tax. Vitality sets this up at no extra cost.
Term life pays out a tax-free lump sum if you die during the policy term (e.g. 20 years). It's the most affordable option and is usually enough to cover a mortgage, replace lost income, or fund school fees. Whole of life pays out whenever you die, with no expiry date — typically used for Inheritance Tax planning and leaving a guaranteed legacy. The premium is higher because the payout is guaranteed.
Vitality is worth it if you'll actively engage with the Vitality Programme. Active members at Platinum status save an average of £332 a year through partner rewards, plus they unlock the Apple Watch deal and a 30% off (Term) or 40% off (Whole of Life) Optimiser discount. If you don't engage with the rewards, a simpler insurer like Aviva or Legal & General may deliver better value for the same cover.
Premiums start from around £5/month for basic cover, but your actual quote depends on your age, health, smoking status, cover amount, term length, and whether you add serious illness cover. The Vitality Optimiser benefit requires a minimum £45/month premium (single) or £60/month (joint) to unlock the full Apple Watch deal and partner rewards. Compare like-for-like across multiple insurers for the best value.
